Writing

  • We value the process above perfection: We celebrate phonetically plausible attempts at spelling (e.g., writing frend instead of friend). Over-correcting spelling early on can stop a child’s desire to write.
  • We help children to write for purpose: Children are more motivated when their writing has a real-world context. Have them write recipes, letters to a favorite character, labels for a classroom display, or invitations to a school event.
  • The ultimate goal in KS1 is to foster a love for writing while establishing the routine habits of basic punctuation (capital letters, finger spaces and full stops) and phonetic spelling.
